With increased corporate and foundation support, the Chapter is able to reach out to more and more people living with MS in the Washington metro area and expand our programs to serve our clients better.

Chapter Programs and Services

The following is a description of some of the local programs offered by the Chapter to help improve the quality of life for those affected by MS:

Respite Care
The Chapter recognizes the importance of rest and relief for a primary caregiver from the daily activities of caring for a loved one affected with MS. Respite stipends enable eligible families to obtain in-home respite care services through selected home agencies.

Medical Equipment/Home Modifications
The Chapter provides financial support on an individual basis to people with MS for the repair and acquisition of durable medical equipment. This service is for those who cannot obtain it through other resources. The equipment/modifications improve mobility, overall functioning and independence.

Caregiver's Day
An afternoon of education and relaxation for caregivers to give them a break from their care-giving duties.

In Good Company: The Rest of Me
One-day program for men and women living with MS to focus on wellness and health issues beyond

MS Chapter Newsletter "Update" (PDF Download)
The Chapter informs its members of the hundreds of programs it provides primarily through "Update," a quarterly publication that is sent to people who have MS, family members, health professionals, and donors. Information is also presented on progress in MS research, advocacy and local resources.

Financial Assistance - Emergency Fund
Temporary financial assistance for clients for rent; utility and telephone bills; medical equipment not covered by insurance policies; and family expenses. Max. of $750 per family/per year based on need and availability

Come Together (Family Education)
A day of education and recreation for people with MS, their friends and family members.

Children's Newsletter "Mighty Special Kids" (PDF Download)
Newsletter for children and teenagers who have a parent or relative with MS. This new publication is a forum for children and teenagers to learn and share with others thoughts and experiences of life with MS

Nursing Home Outreach
A relaxing, supportive day away for people with MS living in nursing homes

Outreach Groups
Self-help groups organized and led by persons with MS are an important component of chapter services. These groups meet monthly for support and the sharing of information. The Chapter also provides on-going training in peer leadership.

Special Transportation
The Chapter provides vouchers for wheelchair accessible transportation to/from medical appointments. Cost: $50 round-trip, $100 with attendant help.

  • Occupational & Physical Therapy In-Home Assessments - $150 per assessment to improve a person's safety, accessibility and productivity with their own environment.
  • Companion Care - $520 for a weekend of in-home care.
  • Personal Care - $16+ per hour; $3,328 for 4 hours per week for a year.
  • Adult Day Center - $455 for one person for five days provides nourishing meals and safe and stimulating environment for person with MS.
  • Lifeline - $400 per year, per person Emergency response system for people who are home alone and immobile while family members are at work or school.
