recruitment tips

The best way to build your team is to ASK people to join you. Don't forget to ask everyone - your friends, family and co-workers are waiting for you to invite them to Join the Movement!

To be eligible for Teams awards, recognition levels, incentives and prizes, you must have an official team of four or more fundraising team members. For the Walk MS, that includes four or more walkers or volunteers. For the Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway or Capital Challenge Walk MS, that includes four or more walkers/riders or Super Crew members.

Some Recruiment Ideas:

1. The best way to build your team is to ask people to join:

  • Tell your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors about the MS events.
  • Send an email to everyone in your address book.
  • Post news and updates about your involvement on your personal website.
  • Offer a team Challenge to your current team members to recruit new team members. Give the person who recruits the most new team members a prize.
  • Ask people to join the team first, then ask for a donation.
  • 2. Recruit volunteers to join your team:

  • Individuals who are not able or not interested in walking or biking may join your team as a volunteer.
  • For the Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway or Capital Challenge Walk MS, invite individuals to become a volunteer by helping for a few hours, a crew member by helping all weekend, or a Super Crew member by helping all weekend and raising funds.
  • 3. Get company support:

  • Ask a high-ranking co-worker to send an endorsement memo to the staff announcing that he or she is supporting your team. Make sure the memo includes information about how to join or support your team.
  • Emphasize that a corporate team is a great way to advertise the company.
  • Ask your company to provide financial support - such as paying for team gear.
  • 4. Display posters and brochures:

  • Display MS event posters, flyers, and brochures in central locations, such as company cafeterias, water cooler areas, restrooms, gyms, library bulletin boards, and other high traffic areas. Include the Team Name and Team Captain's contact information on all materials.
  • Display a sign-up list in accessible areas to generate interest.
  • 5. Host a training event:

  • If you are participating in the Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway or Capital Challenge Walk MS, hosting a training ride or walk is a great opportunity to include individuals who are considering participating or to meet new participants and recruit them for your team.
  • Invite your donors to participate - they may even sign up for the event.
  • 6. Host a Team sign-up table:

  • Host a breakfast or lunch sign-up rally at work. Afternoon snacks and ice cream socials also attract new participants.
  • Hold a new team member registration party. Encourage each team member to recruit at least one more person and bring him or her to the party. Award a prize to the member who brings the most new people to the party.
  • Ask Teams to help out. We will provide you with posters and brochures.
  • 7. Get creative:

  • Create team business cards. Print some inexpensive business cards with your name, the name of the MS event, and your address. Hand these out to everyone you meet.
  • Pack extra snacks. You never know who you will meet on the trail. Before you head out, pack a small zip-lock bag with snacks and a business card. Strike up a conversation with someone, hand him or her the snacks, and ask them to support your team.
